Whale Sighting Network (WSN) Volunteer Addendum

Note: Please send Orca Network the complete Volunteer form and this addendum if you’re interested in volunteering with the Whale Sighting Network.

In exchange for real time text/call whale alerts we ask that volunteers agree to the following:

  • At minimum learn basic species identification of the marine mammals of the Salish Sea.

  • Whenever possible go out scouting in response to a sighting reported in your area.

  • Report cetacean sightings to Orca Network, including photos & videos when possible.

  • Read, follow, and keep current on Be Whale Wise (BWW) guidelines.

  • Document and report any observed violations or harassment of whales.
(In WA waters call NOAA 1-800-853-1964 or complete form on the BWW website)

  • At your comfort and knowledge level: educate the public on the whales you are observing; educate on Be Whale Wise regulations and guidelines, both from vessel and shore perspective.

Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network staff will follow up with you and provide some basic
information on how to receive notifications, and how/where/what/when to report.
